Weather Tidbits: Average Amount of Tornadoes per Month
In this edition of Weather Tidbits, we’ll be discussing the trends in the average number of tornadoes per month across the various states. In January, the highest average number of tornadoes is in the deep south, and is maximized in March and April. This is where the best combination of instability and wind dynamics overlap at this time of the year. From then going to summer, the highest number of average tornadoes migrate to the north, maxing out at the northern plain states. At this point of the year, this is where wind dynamics and instability overlap the most. Going back toward December and winter, the highest number of average tornadoes migrate back south closer toward the Gulf coast states.
