Wicomico County could raise property tax to make up for funding deficit

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Local County leaders need to make big decisions on the budget for fiscal year 2026. While the Board of Education seeks $55 million, leaders believe a balanced budget will better serve all departments.

Paying the BOE’s request would break the revenue cap. The county would consider increasing property taxes to help the issue. Local Realtor Holly Worthington said there has been chatter about purchasing property in the county. “People are talking, neighbors, people buying into this area, they have concern because, over the past decade, we’ve had a 26% hike in property taxes.”

She doesn’t agree with the move, but recognizes there are limited options. “We’re all eating those costs, and it should’ve been budgeted better, instead of having to throw us another bill, costing us another increase.”

This is just one of four funding formulas on the table. .
