UPDATE: Lewes crash claims life of bicyclist

3/13 UPDATE: Police have released the identity of the bicyclist killed in this crash.

The victim has been identified as 68-year-old Steve Carpenter of Milton.

LEWES, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a bicyclist in Lewes Tuesday afternoon.

At around 1 p.m., troopers say a box truck was driving northbound on Venables Drive, approaching Senators Drive. At the same time, a bicyclist was traveling northbound on a paved bicycle path that parallels Venables Drive, approaching Senators Drive. A preliminary investigation revealed that the box truck turned eastbound onto Senators Drive when the bicyclist reportedly pulled onto Senators Drive and hit the box truck.

The bicyclist, a 68-year-old Milton man, was taken to an area hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the box truck, a 26-year-old Wilmington man, and passenger, a 27-year-old New Castle man, were not injured.
