Cambridge-SD advances to second straight championship game on last-second basket

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Cambridge-South Dorchester boy’s basketball pulled out a thrilling victory against Liberty High School in the MPSSAA 1A Semifinal Tuesday night.

The Vikings started hot, hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter to open up a 19-12 lead after the first eight minutes.

The second quarter saw Liberty tie the game at 27 with a three-point barrage from Gavin Speace, who netted four in the quarter. The Vikings, however, responded with an 8-0 run to close the half, leading 35-27 at the break.

The Lions closed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring Cambridge 21-15. A Thomas Wilson buzzer-beating three turned the lead back to Vikings, 50-48, heading into the final period of play.

Tied at 63, the game came down to one final Vikings possession with just over 30 seconds to play. The Lions displayed ferocious defense, but Cambridge was able to move the ball to Thomas Wilson who drove into the lane and banked in a runner for a 65-63 lead with 5 seconds remaining.

A last-second heave for Liberty was no good and the celebration began for Cambridge-South Dorchester.

Semaj Pinder and Thomas Wilson led the Vikings in scoring with 16 each. Sterling Perkins scored 14, with Koby Ennals adding 11 points.

The Vikings head to the MPSSAA 1A Championship for the second year in a row where they will face SEED.
