UPDATE: Motorcycle passenger dies after serious Smyrna crash

Members of the Delaware State Police say Kimberly Smith, 51, of Dover, has died as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash that happened Sunday near Smyrna.

DSP say Smith was transported to Bayhealth Kent General hospital where she was pronounced dead around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The incident reportedly happened on Route 1 southbound in the area of Exit 119 at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, when her brother, James Smith, 53, of Dover, was operating a Honda VTX1300R motorcycle. Troopers say an alleged mechanical malfunction caused them to crash.

James Smith was reportedly transferred to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was treated for undetermined non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers are still investigating the cause of the crash.
