Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles warns public of a EZ-Pass text scam

DOVER, Del.,- The Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles warns the community of an ongoing text scam.

Officials say these recent phishing scams are designed to trick people into paying fake toll debt.

Some of these messages may come from overseas phone numbers.

The DMV would like to remind customers that EZ-Pass will never contact them via text or email to ask them to pay a violation or to add funds to their account.

Kathryn Beasly Deputy Director of Community Relations with the Delaware Department of Transportation says “Anytime you receive any message like this you can always contact the company directly before you take any action. Whether it be a toll scam or any other type of scam credit card company, anything like that.”

Beasley also adds “Be diligent any type whether its any type of whether it’s a toll scam or any type of scam really its think before you click on anything.”

Officials tell us if you receive one of these messages you can also file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

“You can file a complaint via the Internet crime complaint center and you can reach them at IVC.gov and that is run by the FBI so it is a federal level. You can report the text that way make sure you include the number where the text originated from and the web link within the text as well,” says Beasley.
