Random acts of kindness day
SALISBURY, Md. – February 17th, is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, as part of Random Acts of Kindness Week, celebrated every year from the 14th until the 20th. The day and week allow people to spread love, compassion, and positivity through small acts of kindness.
In Salisbury, those with Kind SBY say they have a bigger mission to create, recognize, and inspire kindness within the community and the week furthers that.
The hope is spreading kindness and love will become part of those in the community’s daily life. “It instills hope in people beyond doing the act, there are physical, mental, and spiritual benefits to being kind. I think the behavior of kindness is just something that we all need in our lives every day,” says Annette Johnson, a kindness commissioner with Kind SBY. She adds, “You never know what a person is going through so that random act of kindness can be a game changer for someone in that particular moment.”
As part of Random Acts of Kindness day and week, Kind SBY is assisting Brooks Toy Closet by giving toys to children who have been hospitalized. They’re sharing over 50 kindness posters in second-grade classrooms, and helping Anne Street Village residents by providing 50 blessings bags, and much more.
On this random acts of kindness day, whether complimenting someone, paying for someone’s coffee, or holding a door open, kindness matters. “By taking part in the week, and by challenging themselves to get involved, put someone’s cart back at the grocery store or give flowers or candy, or stuffed animals. There are all kinds of ways to love the people around you. It’s just actually doing it, and I’m excited for them because they’ll get to experience that joy of giving to others,” says Secretary of Kindness, Heather Brooks. While Johnson adds, “It’s just being aware of your surroundings and letting the spirit of kindness move you.”
