The state of Maryland looking to double security grants to at-risk organizations of hate crimes
EASTERN SHORE, Md. – Governor Wes Moore wants to increase the state’s budget for security grants to organizations at risk of hate crimes. The hope is for these groups to enhance their safety at their facilities.
Temple Bat Yam President, Jerry Selig, is thankful for the Governor’s administration initiatives.
“Hopefully it’s something you are never going to need, but you never know, anything can happen. The fact that the governor is going to move forward with these grants is an enormous relief.”
According to the Anti-Defamation League, Maryland has experienced a 211% increase yearly in reported anti-Semitic incidents.
Governor Moore has proposed doubling the state budget, which is currently set at $5 million to $10 million. Selig, hopes this funding will allow them to be more flexible in providing safety.
“The Sheriff’s department, Deputies, and State Police are always helpful to us in having personnel there at large events. But we have meetings and activities all week long.”
Selig hopes things will change for the better in the state and country.
“You know everybody has a right to worship, everyone should be able to assemble, and hopefully in the world, that will be the case.”
