How will Pres. Trump’s exec. order impact LGBTQ+ community? Expert weighs in

SALISBURY, Md. – Monday, President Donald Trump signed a laundry list of executive orders. One declared the federal government will only recognize two genders, male and female.

Executive director of Salisbury PFALG, Mark Delancey believes this move will set the country back tremendously.

“I don’t even think America’s Ready for how that’s going to unfold yet,” said DeLancey.  “There are so many layers to that onion to unfold. We not only have opinions of what gender and sex are– that at least have been in some kind of formation since 1955– how do those unfold at this point?”

Delancey, though not a member of the transgender community, is an ally. He told WMDT Trump’s order muddies the water for a group that has been pioneering for their rights since the 60s.

“Transgender people are going to have the biggest brunt of all of this, and I hate to see how this is going to unfold even more,” said DeLancey. “I can’t even fathom how this is going to evolve, or devolve, into things that are going to affect the LGBTQ community.”

DeLancey said now is the time for all allies to form a united front.

“We knew this was coming down the road, so we need to make sure that we organize; we need to make sure that we are out there with legislation, we are out there as activists, we are out there standing for our rights that still currently exist,” said DeLancey.
