College campuses and university facilities are added to ‘Safe School Zone’ legislation
DELAWARE. – Delaware’s House Bill 311 took effect this year. The act prohibits individuals from firearm possession on college campuses.
It’s part of the ‘Safe School Zone’ legislation, primarily sponsored by 25th District Representative Cyndie Romer.
As of 2025, higher education institutions are now included in the law that limits firearms at schools from elementary to high school.
District 34 Representative Lyndon Yearick tells WMDT the legislation is not as clear as it should be.
“If you were carrying a firearm, you’d be charged with this misdemeanor. You walk another 10-15 feet on the other side of Main Street, and you’re not on university-owned property. So, it’s just confusing and ambiguous.”
The Delaware General Assembly will be reconvened on January 14th in Dover.
