Governor Wes Moore puts a pause on ‘The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future’ education spending plan
EASTERN SHORE, Md. – Governor Wes Moore has announced a pause to the blueprint education spending plan. The project titled ‘The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future’ is a $3.9 billion-dollar spending concept over 10 years for the public education system.
The legislation, which passed in 2020, is currently being put on the shelf by Governor Wes Moore. This is because the state faces $2.7 billion in budget deficits. Maryland State Senator of District 38, Mary-Beth Carozza, understands the problems at hand.
“The realization is hitting that the Blueprint spending plan is not funded fully. Now in Maryland, we’re facing a budget crisis.”
Governor Moore hopes to evaluate the entire plan. However, Senator Carozza believes the state needs to look for answers at the local level first.
“Our local school superintendents, our teachers, and our county government officials need to understand how that plan can be successful in individual counties. It should not be a one-size-fits-all.”
Senator Carozza has been an advocate in her district for additional pathways for students. She suggests we encourage students that there are more options than just college.
“My focus is career readiness, which includes several options. It could be college, the military, apprenticeships, or it could be straight into work. We want to give our students the pathways.”
She urges the local community to come to the general assembly sessions in January. “People need to stay involved throughout the 90-day session. While I welcome them to come up, it’s important, because the best work we can do in Annapolis comes from the frontlines.”
The 2025 Maryland General Assembly session will kick off on January 8th at the state house in Annapolis.
