OCEAN CITY, Md  – The Ocean City Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on December 16, 2024, near 94th Street. James John Johnson, 57, of Ocean City, has been charged in connection with the incident.

Police responded to the strip mall parking lot between 92nd and 94th Streets shortly before 5 p.m. for a report of a collision. Lifesaving efforts were made, and the 59-year-old male pedestrian was transported to Atlantic General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators determined the pedestrian was walking across Coastal Highway when a dark-colored SUV turned onto the highway, then into the parking lot at 92nd Street, where it intentionally struck the victim. The SUV then fled the scene.

After gathering surveillance footage and witness statements, police located the vehicle and identified Johnson as the driver. He was arrested early on December 17 and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, assault, and drug possession. He is being held without bond.

“The swift response and collaboration among our units were key in this investigation,” said Interim Chief Michael Colbert.
