Laurel Middle School teacher honored for November Teacher Who Makes a Difference

LAUREL, Del. – Congratulations are in order for our November Teacher Who Makes a Difference.

Mr. Bill Curtis is an 8th-grade science teacher at Laurel Middle School. Curtis has been teaching for over 40 years and tells us, he knew early on that he wanted to be a teacher after tutoring family members who couldn’t read.

However, one teacher in grade school said teaching wasn’t in his future, but one special teacher his senior year said she saw something special and helped him get a scholarship to college.

Now Curtis says getting this reward shows how dedicated he’s been to being an encouraging educator in his students’ lives over the years. “I’ve had these students in 3rd grade, and then 6th grade, and now I have them in 8th grade and I feel knowing the parents, the relationships I’ve built with the parents and the students has been very important.” He adds, “Every student comes to school wanting to learn, this is their safe place and they need someone to be able to see it on your face that you care about them.”

The Teacher Who Makes A Difference award is brought to you in part by Pam Price and Associates. WMDT surprised Mr. Curtis with goodies, flowers, and a certificate.
