Delaware ACLU claims poor prison management

Vaughn Correctional Center

Almost two months after the fatal hostage situation at the Vaughn Correctional Center, the Delaware ACLU is wondering why inmates are still being subjected to what they claim are abusive policies.

Executive Director Kathleen MacRae claims that inmates and families of inmates have written her office claiming that prisoners are being abused by correctional officers.

She says she understands that in the immediate aftermath of the hostage situation certain policies or procedures needed to be in place to secure the prison.

However MacRae questions why some of those procedures are still in place months after.

MacRae also went as far to say the problems in the department of corrections could be coming from the top.

"I have done some reading and I know that there are some things that don't work and I know that there are things that do work and I don't think that Delaware is handling the management of their prisons to the best that they could be," MacRae said.

MacRae said as of right now they have not made a decision to file a lawsuit against the DOC for the alleged assaults, however they are considering all of their options.
