Local artist showcases paintings at Salisbury Art Space

SALISBURY, Md. – Art comes in all different types of shapes and forms, and colors and compositions.

In the Mind of Laura Kelley, art looks different on the day-to-day.

“Art has become my snapshots of moments, so moments happen, and they just speak to me and say, ‘You got to paint this, you got to paint this,” Kelley said.

From abstract paintings of colorful marble heirlooms that’ve been passed down in her family, to more modest images of intimate moments between a mother and son, Kelley paints it all.

“I capture both times that mean a lot to me, but also the shapes here,” Kelley said.

She found her love for art after leaving the medical field. Her job as a pediatrician took her from Ohio to New York and eventually to Salisbury, where she planted roots.

After decades of work dealing with different people in different capacities, she saw it was finally time to put down the stethoscope and pick up a paintbrush and stroke some of those images across a canvas.

“I think as a pediatrician, I was really struck by the shapes of this and the feelings of this, which is sort of that mothering, looking over, it’s called Watching and it’s a little more representational of some of my work,” Kelley said.

Ask Kelley her favorite piece of work and she’ll probably say something like this:

But after pondering on it for a little while, she’ll tell you this, for now:

“Oh, that’s a hard one, that’s a tough question! Which is my favorite it depends on the day.”

But after pondering on it for a little while, she’ll tell you this, for now.

“Currently, one of my absolute favorites, it’s called The Baby Banana Trees, but it’s really about growing, and I think of these as siblings, and I see things connected,” Kelley said.

You can view Kelley’s gallery at the Salisbury Art Space, from now until December 6th. The Art Space is open Thursday-Sunday, from 12-5PM.
