Election officials warning the public against tampering with ballot drop boxes
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Election officials are warning the public against tampering with ballot drop boxes.
In recent weeks, cases of individuals setting drop boxes on fire have shown up in Washington State and Oregon.
There are multiple drop boxes in each county of Maryland for voters’ convenience. The drop boxes are clearly marked with messages saying that tampering with it is a federal crime.
Wicomico County’s Chief election judge, Eric Brewington, said they are constantly under watch to ensure election security.
“Our drop boxes, they are in fairly public places, so the general public will be able to see them,” Brewington said. “If someone is tampering with them, all of our drop boxes are surveilled by video surveillance, so that if anything does happen to happen, the assailant can be identified.”
