School to expand biligual education for Latino students

FRANKFORD, Del. – One teacher is taking education in Frankford to the next level for Latino families.

Khara Bauer, an English Learners teacher at John M. Clayton Elementary School, is starting an after-school Bilingual Family Literacy Class this new school year.

So, she is asking the community for help with monetary donations to buy 180 bilingual books that support this project.

Bauer says her ultimate goal is to encourage Latino parents to get involved with their child’s education.

Families will get to take the books home while enhancing their English skills. These books come from a company out of California, and they contain folk tales from the Latino community.

“We understand that together we can teach our children in a much stronger capacity and that literacy is our number one step,” said Bauer.

According to educators at John M. Clayton say this project never would have happened without Governor John Carney’s recent English Learners State Funding Initiative because Bauer would not have been hired for the school.
