Salisbury University officially has tailgating for the first time

For the first time in their school history, tailgating is now allowed before sporting events at Salisbury University.

Vice President of Student Affairs Dane Foust says that tailgating is just one piece of a larger initiative to bring spirit to the university to continue a sense of energy and enthusiasm and find better ways to connect the community with the campus.

A major push for tailgating came from student government and Executive Vice President Savannah Albright said that the season opener tailgate intrigued many to head over to the game afterwards.

With the new tailgating, there are rules. The only place tailgating is permitted is on an enclosed field by the tennis courts on the corner of South Division and Avery street at 1123 S. Division St., Salisbury, MD.

With more people partying pregame, SU says more police are on patrol for game days and they’ve warned surrounding housing complexes about tailgate times.

The nearby student housing state they are upping their security and do not permit tailgating on their property.

With tailgating comes alcohol as well. Foust says tailgating ends as soon as the game starts in an effort to prevent potential drunk driving and other disruptions in the area. No hard liquor or beer kegs are permitted.

For tailgating activities, there is a kid zone with corn hole and face painting. Besides that, SU is encouraging fans to bring grills to cook out.

For this upcoming year, SU is looking to have 8 tailgates. Two tailgates for four different sports.

Student Government is hoping to have a homecoming bonfire this year as well as Spirit Friday’s where students can show off their maroon and gold pride colors.
