Vehicles For Change Delmarva breathing new life into the community
SALISBURY, Md – Vehicles For Change Delmarva is giving individuals a second chance, for the first time, they are giving a car to a graduate of the technician school. Instructor of VFC, Ceasar Savage said not everyone gets that chance, so they strive to provide one.
“Everybody doesn’t have that opportunity, coming home from out of prison, they are in recovery houses they are in halfway houses, they are trying to find jobs, there are people not hiring because of background checks and you know we just need somebody to speak for them and when they are coming into this program to build a career, we’re their voice.”
Although they have 12-week classes to train individuals to get a job in the automotive field, VFC, also helps in other ways, through mentorship, financial literacy, and credit-building classes.
Richard Hollerman was a graduate of the June Class, and he was given a Toyota Camry for all his hard work and dedication “One thing about this program, is it has taught me that if you put in the work, the time, the effort, that second chances are awarded,” said Hollerman
As a student, Hollerman often had to walk to and from work, but he never missed a day. After graduating, he got a job at Pohanka Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Salisbury. He said this is life-changing for him.
“Having this car and what this means, what’s it going to do for me, is going to help expand my brand within the community, be able to help other people, not just rely on others but be able to do it myself.”
Vehicles for Change is focused on becoming a building block in Delmarva, and program director Gary Mitchell says that it will be a step-by-step process.
“The mission was always to award low-income family’s vehicles for workforce development so we can help get them, back and forth to work to help break the generational poverty.”
