received some tragic news surrounding the stephen decatur high school football team, but everyone is really rallying with support. yeah, it was shocking news back in august that decatur head coach bobby knox would be taking a leave of absense due to family health issues we’ve filled you in on knox’s grandson eli. the two and a half year old who’s already had one surgery to remove a brain tumor. well there’s a second brain tumor and eli will begin chemotherapy for iut. friends of the family have set up a go fund me page for eli’s medical bills, so you can help by visiting www.gofundme.com/ foreli.the stephen decatur football team is showing tons of support, they’re wearing these great stickers on the back of their helmets that say “eli”. decatur faces easton this friday. spring may be a ways away, but the u-m-e-s baseball program announced the hiring of new head coach charlie goens. goens comes to umes from davis and elkins college in elkins west virginia. he will be the 12th head coach in program history. goens takes the reins from interim head coach john o’neil who steered the team over the course of the past two seasons. the hawks finished with a 14-10 record last season. oneil will remain with the team as an associate head coach. the wait is finally over for delaware high school volleyball. maryland’s schools began play last week, but delaware schools were on hold because of an officiating strike. the strike ended yesterday as the delaware volleyball officials association approved a new one-year contract. it appears that contention between the officials and the delaware interscholastic athletic associaltion officals committee arose from miscommunication as to who was running the contract situation. but at last, teams will hit the court this evening. that’s it for sports – more news and weather straight ahead. stay with us. catch more of the action on our sports page at 47abc.com here’s a
