CRISFIELD, Md. – A fire at a crab shedding house at Handy Seafood International caused $350,000 in damages early Thursday morning. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office says it started just before 2AM. The shedding house was being used as a maintenance shop at the North 7th Street location.

Officials say it started in the rear interior of the building. It took about an hour to get the blaze under control. The cause is still under investigation.

Handy Seafood released a statement Thursday morning saying the incident occurred in the maintenance and storage building, which is separate from the main production facility. They said, ” Local firefighters responded promptly to the scene and successfully contained the fire. No injuries were reported, and the fire caused minimal disruption to the plant’s operations.”
