UPDATE: Weekend crash in Smyrna turns fatal, victim identified
SMYRNA, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a Delaware woman early Saturday morning.
Police say the incident happened at around 3:20 a.m.on Route 13 in Smyrna. A Freightliner tractor was stopped in the left turn lane waiting to make a turn into the Smyrna Rest Area when a Buick Verano collided with the rear of the tractor trailer and became lodged underneath.
The driver of the tractor trailer, a 23-year-old male from Levittown, PA was properly restrained and was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Verano, 40-year-old Tamrell Blake of Newark, DE, was taken to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. She died as a result of her injuries on Sunday.
This crash remains under investigation.
