Weather Tidbits: How to Make Your Own Rain Gauge

This edition of Weather Tidbits will be discussing how you can make your own rain gauge. Materials needed for this experiment include a two liter bottle, 6″ of masking tape, and a ruler. Cut the top of the bottle and place it on the side. Add 1″ of water to the bottle to keep it from tipping. Then copy the ruler markings onto the tape. Place the tape onto the bottle and line up the tape with the top of the water. Flip the cut bottle piece and replace it on the top of the bottle where the open hole is. Your rain gauge should now be finished! As the rain falls, it collects and accumulates inside the bottle where you can record your measurements via the markings on the tape.
