ACT hosting Assateague Cleanup

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md. – With thousands of people packing onto the beaches for the holiday weekend, many piles of trash will be left behind.

But Assateague Coastal Trust is trying to curtail any issues that could result from that.

On Monday, ACT is hosting a beach cleanup for the North Point of Assateague Island, an area that has seen an influx of visitors in recent years and needs special attention.

The group will take volunteers to the North Point by boat and will cleanup from 9 a.m. until noon.

And while the event is all about keeping the beaches clean, ACT tells 47 ABC that this is about more than just picking up trash. It’s all about seeing Assateague and understanding the care that the island needs.

“Really, I feel like for people to want to care for the environment, and want to do a little bit more as far as the littering and the plastic free issue goes, they have to experience the environment first in order to care about it,” Billy Weiland, Communications Director for ACT, said.

ACT tells 47 ABC that since volunteers will be taken to the North Point by boat, registration is required.

Anyone interested in registering for the cleanup can email billy@actforbays.org.
