UPDATE: One dead in Ellendale shooting, second injured

6/17 UPDATE: Police have identified the victim as 17-year-old Ahniya Coverdale of Harrington, Delaware.

ELLENDALE, Del. – A shooting in Ellendale Sunday afternoon is now being investigated as a homicide.

We’re told troopers were called to the Ellendale Community Center at around 4:30 p.m. for a reported shooting. It was learned that a 17-year-old female had been shot and was taken to the Ellendale Fire Company. She was taken to an area hospital by ambulance, where she later died as a result of her injuries.

A second victim, a 19-year-old male, responded to a nearby hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a fight broke out between several people at the community center, during which an unknown suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing shots into the crowd, hitting both victims.
