UMES STEM educator Brad Hartle teaches Entomology on Good Morning Delmarva with edibile critters
47ABC – UMES STEM educator Brad Hartle is back with another kid-friendly science experiment!
On Good Morning Delmarva, Brad taught Jordie and Jake about Entomology and showed them unique critters some cultures eat.
Brad tells us Entomology is the study of insects. He brought a few edible insects you can purchase and allowed Jake to try.
He brought various flavors of dehydrated crickets, mealworms, and cookies made with cricket powder!
Brad says that in many other parts of the world crickets are eaten as a source of protein.
It’s very common in South America.
In fact, crickets can have 2 or 3 times as much protein as a steak!
The cookie mix includes 22 crickets per cookie and can provide a ton of B12 to the body.
Brad warns that you should not eat insects that are not cooked as they can carry bacteria.
If someone has a shellfish allergy, they should not try insects as they may have a reaction to the similar chemicals and proteins that are in both.
Jake describes the taste of the dehydrated crickets as similar to sunflower seeds.
Watch the full educational STEM segment to watch them try a few delicacies.
