Salisbury begins process of replacing lead pipes
SALISBURY, Md – The City of Salisbury is beginning the first phase of what is a national initiative to identify and eventually remove lead pipes from water service lines. All water systems are required by October 16th to submit a Lead Service Line inventory
The service line is the pipe that runs from the water main to the plumbing inside your home.
The city’s Water Works Department is distributing surveys to over 6,000 homes in the area, asking homeowners to respond to the best of their ability. If you’re unsure of the age of your plumbing, just indicate that in your response and Salisbury’s Water Works team will follow up with an in-person inspection to identify the makeup of your service line. The focus is on homes built before 1978.
“We’ve gone through our records, we’ve cross-referenced with our tax records and eliminated any newer homes. If you have a newer home, you do not have lead, but we’ve found there are a lot of old homes in the system.”
Salisbury has applied for federal funding in case the city does have to replace a significant amount of lead service lines.
