Crisfield rallies behind missing one of a kind piece of art

CRISFIELD, Md. –  In Crisfield, the community coming together after a valuable rocking chair that was supposed to go to auction to raise funds for the Arts and Entertainment District has gone missing.

“Between 10:30 on Friday night and about 9 o’clock on Saturday morning the rocking chair disappeared from the front lawn of the building,” explains Jim Neil of Crisfield A&E District.

At first, the Crisfield Arts and Entertainment District thought it was just a misunderstanding, but now four days later it’s still nowhere to be found.

“We were a little distraught. We reached out to see if anybody had picked it up or brought it inside or whatever we could find but it only took a couple of hours and there were posts on Facebook.”

Posts that quickly turned into several calls and texts from community members wanting to help bring this one of a kind chair back since it was supposed to be an auction item for A&E’s fundraiser in June.

“It’s amazing how much it actually means to the community to get this back the artwork was fantastic it was painted by Betty Orr.”

Shawna Kearsley, a Crisfield resident explains, “It is more than a chair, it’s symbolic of a community that is under revitalization and that is looking forward to moving forward.”

So while many are disappointed that the chair hasn’t turned up, people we spoke to Tuesday are inspired by the amount of people that truly care.

Neil adds, “Everyone seems to be coming together chipping in trying to make it right it’s nice, it’s really nice.”

“I think this is absolutely a silver lining for a semi-dark situation that the community is saying look we’re moving forward we’re excited about the arts and entertainment,” explains Kearsley.

We’re told the local artist, Bette Orr, who painted the chair that went missing has already started to working on another beautiful piece of artwork to donate in its place.
