Operation We Care honors Fruitland officer Spencer Wiersberg

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. – Hundreds of people on Sunday along with state officials and first responders gathered at the Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Company to support troops stationed around the world.
The annual event is called Operation We Care and it allows people to pack up boxes with supplies like baby wipes and deodorant.
Several people were honored at the event including Fruitland Police Officer Spencer Wiersberg who is battling a rare form of bone cancer.
To show support Wiersberg was presented with a flag signed by local first responders.
“The community when they heard about his diagnosis they just came to help all of the Wiersberg family because of any extra bills they were going to have,” said Operation We Care Co-Founder, Diana Merritt.
“The community has just rallied around to support Spencer and his family,” said Merritt.
Volunteers on Sunday said Operation We Care packs over 2,000 care packages every year.
