Matt MacCoy now running for Mayor of Seaford
SEAFORD, Del. – A Seaford City Councilman has announced that he’s no longer running for State Senate and is now running for Mayor.
Matt MacCoy, who announced with 47 ABC News last year that he was running for Delaware’s 21st Senatorial District, is now running for Mayor of Seaford.
MacCoy tells us he changed his mind after local leaders and constituents encouraged him to run following Mayor David Genshaw’s announcement that he would not be seeking another term. He says he ultimately had to take his own aspirations out of the equation and do what’s best for the City of Seaford.
“It took a lot of thought and prayer and we sat back and thought about it and said ‘you know, if you take your own initial thoughts and aspirations away from it, does this make sense for the City?’ Yes, it does,” MacCoy said emphatically. “Does it make sense for the Council? Yes, it does.”
Moving forward, MacCoy says he will campaign on building a stronger, more economically prosperous Seaford through increased outreach to businesses to relocate to the town. He says, if elected, he will continue to place a special focus on the Nylon Capital Shopping Center, a mostly vacant shopping complex that local leaders have been working to revitalize for years.
“We’re going through the process of meeting potential partners and investors now,” MacCoy explained. “The opportunity here for economic development is going to be huge.”
MacCoy is currently running unopposed. The City of Seaford’s election will be held on Saturday, April 20th, 2024.
