Early Game Recap of Day 1 at the Governors Challenge
SALISBURY, Md. – The Governors Challenge returned to Salisbury for the 41st edition of the largest holiday basketball tournament in the country.
Colonel Richardson downed Indian River, 69-48 in the first game of the tournament on Court 1 at the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center. The Colonels were led by Dre Lake’s 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Ja’Zir Dickerson shot a perfect 9/9 from the field with 20 points, adding 6 steals.
Indian River was led by Tay’Von Rounds’ 22 points. Rashad Hopkins collected 11 rebounds with 4 blocks.
Polytech earned the win in the following game on Court 1 over Washington, 48-40. Sophomore Davian Stevenson shot 11/16 from the floor, leading all scorers with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
Washington was led by Elijah Thomas and his 22 points on 8/10 shooting. Thomas also collected 4 steals.
Milford defeated North Caroline, 72-51, to earn their third win of the season. Senior Jayden Norman had 17 points for the Bucs, while Jordan Savage dropped 16.
North Caroline was led by Nasai Bell’s 23 points and 4 steals.
Sussex Tech earned a big 77-52 win over Pocomoke in their afternoon matchup at the Civic Center. Tech’s defense was relentless, blocking 17 Warrior shots, forcing 21 turnovers including 12 steals. Isaiah Ayers and Kenton James each had 16 points for the Ravens.
Jy’Mir Schoolfield did his part in the paint for Pocomoke. He collected 16 boards, scored 5 points, and gathered 3 assists.
