D.A.R.T. Youth Coalition in Wicomico County

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – There are local resources working to prevent kids from getting involved with drugs, and the Wicomico County Drug Action Response Team Youth Coalition, DART for short, is one of them.

The group encourages children in middle and high school to become leaders, and educate younger kids about the drugs they may come in contact with.

Alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention coordinator Cynthia Shifler says they are looking to recruit more members, especially being that most of the previous attendees graduated.

“It’s their world. I mean it might not have been our world when we were growing up, but it’s their world.”

“That’s what they see, that’s what they know and it’s a societal problem, so the only way we are going to change it is with youth.”

Shifler says the organization currently only has one member as recruiting was difficult during the pandemic. She adds that this is not a fear based deterrent technique, but strictly informative.
