The Rehoboth Beach Police Department says one of their officers used a recently-received naloxone kit from the Delaware Office of Emergency Medical Services to save a man's life on the same day the kit was issued to him.

Police say the kit with naloxone hydrocloride, used to treat emergency opioid overdoses, was issued to Cpl. Eric Hiller on Wednesday morning.

At 3:40 PM that same day, Cpl. Hiller responded to a call of an overdose at the Summer Place Hotel on 30 Olive Ave.

Police say Cpl. Hiller found a 23-year-old man unresponsive on the floor with a civilian attempting to give the man CPR. Witnesses alerted the officer that the man had injected heroin.

Cpl. Hiller and Rehoboth Beach EMS administered naloxone to the man, who shortly regained consciousness.

The man was transported to Beebe Health and later released, officials said.

Cpl. Hiller says he credits the hands-on trailing from Sussex County EMS with his success in using the newly-acquired naloxone kit.
