Experts provide tips for safe charitable giving this holiday season

DELMARVA – If you’ve been in the giving spirit this holiday season, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore is urging you to make sure your donations are going to the right place.

CFES President Erica Joseph said that during this time many people look to take advantage of that giving spirit and can pose as valid groups or organizations when they’re actually not.

Joseph added that before you give anything, become familiar with the organizations you want to support by either volunteering or visiting their physical location.

She also told 47ABC that your due diligence shouldn’t stop there. “Research them online through charity navigator, the IRS website, or other resources. You can also reach out to your community foundation and get more information about groups you’re participating with, especially for our donor advisors,” Joseph said.

Joseph recommends not doing any online giving unless you’re familiar with that organization. She added to decline giving to any organization that feel make you feel pressured to do so.
