Local NAACP to recognize Gulls coach Sherman Wood

SALISBURY, Md. (Salisbury University) – The Wicomico County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced the selection of Salisbury University football head coach Sherman Wood among its honorees as part of the 18th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Gala.The annual event celebrates and recognizes the achievements of individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the enrichment and upliftment of communities of color in Wicomico County, Md.In addition to recognizing this year’s award winners, the gala will also feature performances from local artists, including live music, spoken word, and fine art paintings.Wood was selected to recognize his leadership and guidance of the football team, which finished with a 6-4 record in 2023 to earn the program’s 14th consecutive winning season. In that timeframe since 2010, the Sea Gulls hold a 107-38 (.734) overall record with six NCAA Tournament appearances.Wood surpassed 200 career wins on Oct. 21, further cementing his legacy as the program’s all-time winningest head coach. He currently holds 202 career victories, 181 of which have come with the maroon and gold. Wood is one of just 12 active head coaches across all levels of NCAA football to win 200 games.Tickets range from $20-40 and are available to purchase online. The ceremony will be held at the Guerrieri Academic Commons on the campus of Salisbury University, located at 1134 South Salisbury Boulevard, on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.
