UPDATE: Weapon found at Mardela Middle/High School, juvenile charged

WICOMICO CO., Md. – A 13-year-old has been charged after being found in possession of a handgun at a Wicomico County school Thursday morning.

The investigation began when staff and the assigned School Resource Deputy at Mardela Middle and High School were informed that a student brought a handgun into the school. Officials located a 9mm handgun in the student’s backpack, which we’re told was not loaded, and no ammunition was found.

The 13-year-old student was removed from the school by the Deputy, and a request for a Juvenile Referral was forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Services. The teen was charged with possession of a firearm by a minor and disturbing school operations.

The Department of Juvenile Services ordered the teen to be held pending his appearance in Juvenile Court.
