La Red Health Center in Georgetown brings resource event to community
GEORGETOWN, Del. – To tackle the ongoing opioid crisis, La red Health center pulled together various resources, to encourage community members to reach out for help.
Delaware has the second highest drug overdose death rate in the country. The opioid crisis hits home for Sebastian Carney, who is on his own road to recovery.
“To all the people that are struggling with addiction, recovery is possible. Seek it out and go to the right people- there’s many people that are willing to help you,” Carney said.
“You have countless things out here- a bunch of different counseling. It’s an experience to be able to learn, to be able to grow from others, gain something that you didn’t already have,” Carney added.
With a growing Latin X population in Sussex County, John Rossum, the Behavioral Health Administrator with La Red Health center, said targeting the community and putting the preventative services at the forefront will hopefully help more people recover.
“The Spanish community doesn’t really have as many resources, or know about as many resources, so we want to make sure they know everything that we offer [at] La Red,” Rossum said. “We have other places that offer treatment resources as well, for both substance use and mental health.”
Attendees leaving with valuable information and support resources, but also a vital lifesaving tool, in case they are around someone who overdoses.
“They have the means to sit there and save their loved one’s life, and also, if someone’s here that uses Narcan, [and] if they’re having an event, they can help themselves,” Rossum said. “So, I mean, we’re bringing the community together to help solve a problem that we can’t solve individually.”
