Perdue workers consider unionizing amid claims of unfavorable working conditions

SALISBURY, Md.- Workers at Perdue will be making an important decision this week.

That decision will be whether or not to unionize with the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 27 Union.

This isn’t the first time the company has been hit with claims from workers citing unfavorable work conditions. Workers reached out to form the union when concerns about safety were raised after several incidents involving staff. They also plan to address concerns of pay and fairness.

The union committee says UFCW Local 27 has won an election against Perdue before and they’re confident that they could come out victorious again.

Perdue sent 47 ABC a statement in response that reads, “Perdue AgriBusiness is committed to providing a safe working environment where our associates are treated fairly in all aspects of their employment. We respect the right of our Perdue AgriBusiness associates to vote on whether they want union representation at the company’s oil refinery. Next week, our associates will voice their opinion on whether they want a union or not and Perdue supports the process.”

The union would cover approximately 46 current employees and voting will take place later this week at the Salisbury facility.

Results will be announced on Friday.
