Snow Hill restaurant works to reopen after flooding

For Down Under Subs and Pizza in Snow Hill, Md. Tuesday marked the first day they’ve been able to get inside their restaurant since the flooding started last week. Over the weekend they were able to get through the water by four wheeler, but couldn’t get in the building because the water was too high.
“We’ve had water all the way up to 30 inches inside the store,” said store owner Bob Torrey, “It’s probably the second worst I’ve ever seen it.”
The restaurant sits on Snow Hill Rd. right where the worst of the flooding hit. Officials estimated water could have been up to three and half feet.
Torrey is no stranger to flooding and had the restaurant designed with electrical outlets on the ceiling to avoid water damage. Despite that the water still took a toll on the restaurant, separating the propane tanks from the building, causing damage to some of the side walls, not to mention the damage inside where the standing water reached the tables.
“Everything has to be bleached, everything has to be cleaned, all the food has to be thrown away,” Torrey said.
Tuesday the day was spent pushing the water outside of the restaurant and assessing the damage. Torrey said if everything goes as planned and this weekends rain is not too bad, they should be able to re-open by next week.
Torrey said throughout the process, the support from the community on places like Facebook have helped.
“It’s really been nice to know that the community stayed behind us and surrounded us and thought of us,” Torrey said.
Torrey said they’re excited about reopening even added a joke, that with all the added water fresh fish may even be on the menu next week.
