One killed, multiple injured in four-car crash in Smyrna

SMYRNA, Del. – Police have identified the woman killed in a four car crash in the Smyrna area Tuesday morning.

Just after 7:30 a.m., troopers responded to Wheatleys Pond Road at the intersection of Mount Friendship Road for a reported four car crash. It was learned that a blue 2016 Ford Fiesta was stopped in the southbound lane of Wheatleys Pond Road, preparing to turn left onto Mount Friendship Road. A tan 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Wheatleys Pond Road, approaching the back of the Fiesta, at which point it reportedly failed to stop and hit the rear of the Fiesta. The Fiesta was forced into the path of a white 2015 Jeep Cherokee as a result, which was traveling northbound on Wheatleys Pond Road. The Fiesta flipped onto its drivers side as a result of the impact, at which point the Cherokee then hit a red 2013 Chevrolet Camaro that was stopped at a stop sign on Mount Friendship Road.

The driver of the Fiesta, identified as 25-year-old Caitlynn Mitchell, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Jeep, a 31-year-old woman, was treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Silverado, a 32-year-old man, was not injured. Additionally, the driver of the Camaro, a 34-year-old man, and his passengers were not injured.
