White Marlin Open returns celebrating 50th anniversary

OCEAN CITY, Md.- “I drove 4 hours from Northeastern Pennsylvania to come be at White Marlin Fest,” Kabosky said.

Danielle Kabosky owns Miss Mudd company. Kabosky and her two gal pals are vendors at the 2023 White Marlin Festival in Ocean City. Their collection of macrame art, fiber weaving, and concrete pottery pieces are all up for grabs. “We actually get to get our brand out a little and get people to see what we do and talk to us. People want to buy art and actually connect with the artist,” Wicked Waves Fiber Studio Owner Beth Deeley said.

The White Marlin Open is now the one of the largest sports fishing tournaments in the world and is expected to pay out more than $10 million in prizes for the 50th anniversary. We’re told its only right for the world’s biggest billfish tournament be held in the resort town, as Ocean City is actually considered the ‘White Marlin Captial of the World’.

Susan Jones with the Ocean City Hotels, Motels, Restaurant Association says the event brings big bucks into town and lots of spectators. “Lots of people actually come here to watch the White Marlin Open. They like to watch the weigh-ins, they like to stand at the inlet, and watch the boats go out in the early morning,” Jones said.

Jones adds that although the resort town is a tourist hot spot, events like this are what keep many coming back. “A lot of times now people aren’t content with just sitting on the beach for hours upon hours. They need to be doing something with their time. Events are very important part of Ocean City,” Jones said.

As for this creative trio, the festival is not only a way to reach more customers but give them an opportunity to find a little inspiration. ‘A couple of years ago I stopped drinking and become sober. Then, I started making friendship bracelets and I wanted to make it my mission to give back,” Wanderlust.SRV Owner Nelly Colyver said.

“Now, I think I’m finally just figuring out my niche and what I truly like to create.”

Jones also tells us the event brings in lots of fresh fish for local shelters to help feed those in need.
