Delaware State University investigating hazing allegations after students hurt in crash
DOVER, Del. – Students at Delaware State University say they’re praying for four of their fellow classmates involved in a serious car crash Saturday that left two young men in critical condition.
“It could’ve been prevented, it should’ve never happened I feel bad,” said freshman Mayda Berrios.
According to Delaware State Police, the four students were driving along Route 1 in Smyrna when for unknown reasons the car began to spin out of control. Crossing over the center median into the northbound lanes and colliding with a pick up truck. But the speculation behind the cause of the crash has school officials pushing to learn more.
“I heard that it was an accident that was caused by exhaustion and the driver fell asleep behind the wheel,” said sophomore Tyejha Martin.
Students tell 47 ABC that they heard the driver of the car was pledging a fraternity. And as part of the hazing process, he had to stay awake for long periods of time.
“Most people when you think of going to college you have your dream places that you want to pledge,” said Tyjea Martin.
“It was a surprise because I didn’t think hazing even happened on DSU’s campus,” said Tyejaha.
Early Tuesday morning, the university sent out this statement regarding the accident. Saying that they are now conducting an investigation into what they now know are “allegations of hazing and improper conduct in the membership intake processes of at least one Greek-letter organization on campus.” And,that they’re “committed to creating a campus that is welcoming to all students. And any action to the contrary will not be tolerated.”
“It’s something that you have to look into to get down to the bottom of it and get justice for the people that were in the accident, ‘said Tyejaha.
Officials add that all activities for this fraternity in particular, will be on hold. Until the investigation is complete. School officials also said in their press release that their thoughts and prayers are with the injured students, their families, and the entire campus community. And, the current conditions of these students are still unknown at this time.
Delaware State Police are still investigating this crash. They say that investigation is in the very early stages, and further details will be released as they become available. They add that if you have any information regarding the incident you can call the Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
