2nd annual ‘Explore the Trades’ event looks to raise awareness on skilled labor careers, tackle industry shortage

BERLIN, Md. – The 2nd annual ‘Explore the Trades’ event looks to raise awareness about possible careers in the skilled-trade industry.

Seaside Plumbing spearheads the initiative alongside other local businesses to connects parents and students with professionals in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.

Attendees will get information on pay, see live demonstrations, and potentially get linked to apprenticeships and other opportunities.

Organizers tells us they hope the event can also address the lingering labor shortage. Currently, we’re told for every three people retiring from a trade only one person is entering. “Without HVAC, plumbing, and electrical our world would just not operate the way that it does today,” Seaside Plumbing Vice President Lauren Martin said.

“It’s not a second-rate decision to say well I didn’t get into college, so I’ll go into the trades. It’s really a fantastic if not better alternative to getting a college degree.”

Martin tells us last year they brought on 5 apprentices as a result of the event and built connections with local schools. Other event organizers include Expert Wire and Arctic Heating and Air Conditioning.

The event is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 2nd at Seaside Plumbing located at 10545 Friendship Road, Berlin.
