Delmar man convicted on attempt to flee from police and other charges

SNOW HILL, Md. – A Delmar man has been sentenced after he reportedly tried to flee from police back in November 2018.

On January 23rd, 39-year-old Anthony Roper was convicted in the District Court of Maryland for Worcester County for attempting to elude uniformed police by fleeing on foot, attempting to elude uniformed police by failing to stop, and failing to immediately stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury.

The charges date back to an incident on November 13th, 2018, when Ocean City Police officers saw Roper driving a vehicle with illegal window tint in the area of 65th Street and Coastal Highway. It was also learned that Roper was wanted on an active arrest warrant for felony drug trafficking out of Wicomico County. Officers then stopped Roper’s vehicle in the area of 94th Street and Coastal Highway, however, Roper accelerated away and led police on a high speed chase through town.

He eventually lost control of his vehicle around 65th Street and struck a police patrol vehicle that was being driven by Public Safety Aide Hernandez. Roper then got out of his vehicle and fled on foot, but was eventually caught in the area of 66th Street.

We’re told Hernandez was treated for head and neck injuries at Atlantic General Hospital, and his patrol vehicle sustained serious damages.

Roper was sentenced to 5 months and 29 days per count, to run concurrently.
