American Red Cross providing financial assistance, mental health resources for tornado victims

DELAWARE – The American Red Cross is also assisting with ongoing recovery efforts following Saturday’s deadly tornado in Sussex County.

The American Red Cross Delmarva Chapter tell us they quickly opened a reception center Sunday that provided lodging for families who were displaced from their homes. They also worked with several state partners on damage assessments.

Executive Director Theresa Young tells us as they focus on recovery they want to help families navigate through this difficult time and lead them to their new normal.

“We’re helping with food, water, financial resources, emotional support, and the replacement of medications according to need,” Young said.

“We are boots on the ground. We have volunteers out there today and within 2 hours of the event. We will continue to be out supporting.”

Young also says the American Red Cross does offer disaster mental health resources for those in need.

If you’re in need of assistance,  you can call 1-800-RED CROSS.
