Frigid temperatures prompt shelters to open early

SEAFORD, Del. – Shelters in lower Delaware are opening their doors early Monday to give those without shelter a place to stay warm.

Code Purple in Sussex County is in full effect Monday. Love Inc., one of their shelters in Seaford, actually welcomed guests as early as 7 o’clock Monday morning due to the freezing temperatures. That’s 10 hours earlier than they usually do.

Officials say it gives them a chance to make sure that those that are struggling with homelessness are staying away from the bitter cold.

“It’s just somewhere where they can get out of the weather. It’s just too cold for anybody to be out there and they just need somewhere warm to stay, food to warm them up and just people to love them and look after them,” explains Josh Davis, a local volunteer.

They’re expecting to be completely full Monday night because of the weather but again anyone is welcome — men, women or even families.

Shelters that participate in Code Purple also always need volunteers.
