SALISBURY, Md.- “It’s quite cold outside but the Christmas spirit is warm,” Trantham said.

Wheels rolled into The Salvation Army of the Lower Eastern Shore Wednesday as it marked distribution day for their Angel Tree Program. It gives families in need a little holiday cheer, providing clothing and toys for infants to children up to 14 years old in Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset counties.

“There really has been a great spirit of Christmas here. Folks are grateful,” Trantham said.

482 families including over 1,200 children were served this year.

Core Officer Major Christina Trantham says that need for assistance continues to grow. “With inflation, especially at the grocery store, one of things that we’ve been able to provide this year as always is a food box. There’s a nice rooster in there that’s provided by Perdue Farms,” Trantham said.

There were many hands-on deck to make this drive-thru distribution possible. Volunteers we spoke with say seeing those smiling faces makes their hard work worth it. “It’s just the humbleness of the people and the kids. The fact that parents are bringing their kids with them and showing them that there’s people out here who really care,” Volunteer Deion Jenkins said.

Although the goal is to make sure all local children can experience the magic of Christmas, The Salvation Army’s resources extend well after the holiday. “We help with food, clothing and other sorts of assistance,” Trantham said.

“I always tell people don’t think you’re the only person going through what you’re going through because everybody’s going through hardships,” Jenkins said.

Registration for this year’s program is now closed but those in need can still reach out for other assistance the Salvation Army provides.
