Easton Police warning residents of new scam
EASTON, Md. – The Easton Police Department is warning residents of a new scam circulating the area.
Police say the scam involves residents receiving a check through the mail from someone claiming to be from the Dr. Pepper Company, stating that they wanted the receiver to assist them in a marketing plan. The sender then asks the receiver to cash the checks, keep a portion of the money, and then purchase gift cards with the remaining money. The senders will ask for the card numbers and spend the card’s value without ever having to touch the gift cards, stating that they are using the money to purchase marketing materials such as vinyl decals for their vehicles.
We’re told the checks are fraudulent and the receivers will have given the scammer money.
Police are reminding residents to take caution with any offer that seems to be too good to be true.
