BERLIN, Md. – One local Girl Scout Troop recently put together and donated cancer care kits to patients at the John H. ‘Jack’ Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center.

Cadette Girl Scout Troop 736 has worked over the last six months as Juniors to develop a plan to help those in our community who have been diagnosed with cancer. Each of the girls have been affected by cancer in some way or another, and in May they began their plan to achieve the Bronze Award, the highest award that can be achieved by a Junior Girl Scout.

Initially, the girls spent time brainstorming a list of what to include in a cancer care kit, contacting the Cancer Center through their friends at the American Cancer Society – Relay for Life of North Worcester and the AGH Foundation.

The girls then put together flyers to seek donations of items that they could include in each kit. Items in the care kits include tooth brushes, toothpaste, ginger candies, teas, puzzle books, and more. The troop then split up into teams and went out in the community to talk to business owners and participate in local events to help encourage community support for this project.

On Wednesday, November 21st, Troop 736 delivered the kits to patients at the Cancer Care Center.

“The newly bridged Cadette Girl Scout Troop 736 of Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay is pleased to present 75 small care kits, 15 lap blankets, and a coloring station to patients of the John H. ‘Jack’ Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Center of Berlin. These young ladies will be honored as a troop on the On My Honor ceremony in January in achieving the Girl Scout Bronze Award,” said Bronze Project Troop Advisor Colleen Rutzler.
