Historic Chincoteague Fire House up for sale

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – An iconic piece of Chincoteague’s history is up for sale. After more than 80 years in the Chincoteague Fire House, the Volunteer Fire Company has decided it’s time to move on.

Denise Bowden, the Public Relations Officer for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department said, “I hope that whoever purchases this building will love it and care about it as much as we have over the years.”

Originally built in the 1930s, the Chincoteague Fire House has seen it’s fair share of history over the years.

Bowden said, “This building holds so many memories for so many people.”

Meghan Oliver, an Associate Broker at the Long & Foster Real Estate Company said, “We have a lot of historic properties on Chincoteague, but nothing as iconic as the Chincoteague Fire House.”

Despite all the history and memories made, banquets, pony pennings and all, this building no longer serves the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Bowden said, “Technology has caught up with us. This building, being built in the time frame that it has, there’s only so much you can do in this day and time. They don’t make fire trucks the way they did back in the 30’s and 50’s.”

Just because the fire company has outgrown the building, doesn’t make it any less valuable.

The building, listed with Long & Foster Real Estate at 950,000 dollars offers endless possibilities.

Oliver said, “I envision another restaurant, condos, affordable housing.”

We’re told some people are already expressing interest in the property.

Oliver said, “A gentleman did call me while he was sipping his coffee and told me he has converted two of these in the past into breweries and condos.”

Regardless, the Volunteer Fire Company just hopes whoever ends up buying the building will treat it with the respect and care it deserves.

Bowden said, “It has a lot of potential but I hope whoever buys it loves it and respects it as much as we have all these years.”

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company is hoping to move into their new station on Deep Hole Road by January.

The Fire Company’s new building will feature bunk space for medics, training room facilities, new technology and more.

If you’re interested in buying the old Fire House, you are encouraged to call Meghan Oliver with Long & Foster real estate at 757-894-0798.
